OTHER PROJECTS
Over 90% of SMEs consider their participation in EU funded project a success. How can we learn from their experiences?
A recent study financed by the European Commission within the “KAPPA-Health” project found that over 90% of research-intensive SMEs having participated in a FP6 co-financed research project considered their participation as a success and 50% of these have already generated commercial return.
The KAPPA-Health project aims to assess the success factors which lead healthcare companies to generate value from their participation in a co-funded research project, and to determine how this can be planned at the time the decision is made to apply for an FP7 project.
The KAPPA-Health partners also organize workshops and train SMEs on how to access funding for research and development. The KAPPA-Health partners also organize workshops and train SMEs on how to access funding for research and development.

NEW PROFILES / SPOTLIGHT ON RESEARCH PROFILES
Health research excellence in the spotlight: Portugal
In our newsletter, we present key research and innovation actors in the “Health” area of European Member States, Associated Countries and Candidate Countries. In this newsletter, we are introducing several Portuguese researchers and SMEs willing to participate in FP7 research projects. We invite you to learn more about the expertise of potential new partners for your FP7 projects!
Portugal has excellent research groups in the health and biotechnological sector. The results obtained by its research gave origin to many spin-off companies, which rapidly turned into SMEs and continued independently and successfully. Most of the key players in this area are present in the SMEs go Health (SGH) database. However, you can have access to a large number of research institutes and companies by consulting the following associations:
On our website, we are highlighting some of the Portuguese research institutes and companies which are in the SGH database, covering different areas of expertise.

SUCCESS STORIES / QUOTES FROM CLIENTS
Success Story from Switzerland
FP7 is often stigmatized as being too complex and excessively burdensome for SME’s.
The recent success story presented by SMEs go Health is showing that this is not necessarily the case!
Dr. B. Pilger, the coordinator of the project "FLUINHIBIT: Small Molecule Inhibitors of the Trimeric Influenza Virus Polymerase", is particularly positive about his experience with FP7. His company, the Swiss SME “PiKe Pharma GmbH”, strives to provide patients with better antiviral drugs in therapeutic areas where limited treatment options are available.
Their activities fitted perfectly with one of the FP7 Health-call topics, but they only discovered this about eight weeks before the call deadline. However, with the help of his National Contact Point and his experienced partners, Pike Pharma not only succeeded to submit a proposal in this short delay, but the company even got selected for funding!
