European Pharmacoepidemiology Network for Monitoring the Benefit and Risk of Medical Products
(Italy)
Research Areas:
Our Regional Health Authority manages a large database that covers drug prescription records from community pharmacies and hospital discharge records. The linkage is performed through an individual anonymous identifier. The data collection is longitudinal, is updated regularly (drug records monthly and hospital based records on a 6 months basis) and goes back to 1993. Regional Cancer Registry and the Registry of mortality data are also available. On the grounds of the reported data different epidemiological studies has been performed.
The construction of a computerized database of laboratory data on a regional scale is underway and will be integrated to the record linkage system.

Proposal on the use of the SELEX methodology for generating druglike molecules for traditional (protein) targets.
(Italy)
Research Areas:
Together with five European partners we are developing a project aimed to the rapid discovery of low molecular weight drug molecules inhibiting proteins related to the formation and progression of cancer and related diseases using the SELEX method.
We intend to characterize the gene functions involved in the development of human disease, particularly cancer, by rapid design of selective inhibitors of the translational end-products. Unlike to siRNA-based approaches, the relevance of the final protein target could be analyzed. Our proposal consists of a new approach to design selective drug-like inhibitors, which may be leads for future therapeutic approaches in short time periods allowing high throughput characterizations of gene products. Our method would not only give us leads in a much shorter period than conventional lead-finding methods, but also provide means to scale-up the synthesis of those leads, stemming from our process, in a selective and proprietary fashion.
To accomplish this goal, research groups with expertise in the fields of medicinal, combinatorial (dynamic combinatorial libraries), and organic chemistry, biochemistry biophysics, as well as membrane reactor technology have been assembled.
We are looking for expertise in the field of protein production, and biological screening for our leads to cancer-related targets.
We are interested in (preferentially) corporate partners, who could provide us with proteins being targets for the intervention of cancer and biological assays for the characterization of our leads.
